NATIONAL LAWN CARE MONTH

A HEALTHY YARD BOOSTS ENVIRONMENT, SAVINGS

The Virginia-based Professional Landcare Network, or PLANET, America's nonprofit lawn care and landscape association, celebrates National Lawn Care Month by reminding consumers about the benefits of a healthy lawn.

More than 30 million acres of lawns exist in the United States, removing an estimated 5 percent of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, according to the organization.

"A healthy lawn not only adds curb appeal, but provides sound proofing and cooling effects to the home," said PLANET President David Snodgrass.

A well-maintained 50-foot by 50-foot lawn produces enough oxygen for a family of four.  Eight healthy front lawns have the cooling effect of 70 tons of air conditioning - enough to cool 16 average homes.

Dense, healthy grass slows down and filters runoff, removing contaminants and trapping soil.  Clean, filtered water then returns to the underground water supply.

Turf also provides pollution control by trapping dust and smoke particles from the atmosphere.

The healthier the turf, the thicker the roots, and it's this thick carpet of healthy turf that effectively filters and purifies both air and water.

PLANET offered these lawn-care tips for the April observance:

Clear the lawn of leaves, downed branches, and other debris that have fallen during the winter.

Aerate the lawn if it seems compacted, if moss is growing, or the grass has worn down.  Machines can be rented or a professional can provide the service.

Check the lawn's pH balance.  Grass likes a well pH-balanced lawn.  Many local extension offices provide this service.

JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH APRIL

Frozen grass should not be walked on or damage to leaf material will occur.  Wait to walk on grass until later in the morning after grass defrosts

Tune lawn mowers and sharpen blades

Lawns grow more quickly in the spring.  This increases mowing frequency to every 4 to 7 days.

Mower height should be at highest setting 3 - 3.5 inches

Keep an eye on temperatures and rainfall.  Grass less than 1 year old is especially subject to dry conditions.

MAY JUNE JULY AUGUST

Water MORNINGS only, through summer to decrease brown patch.

BROWN PATCH

Watch for round dinner plate circles in the lawn, usually in the thickest, healthiest grass especially when night temperatures are higher than 65 degrees.

MOWING

Mow only when dry so as not to spread Brown Patch Fungus.

DROUGHT / HEAT STRESS

Wilting will appear as darker, bluish-black areas and leaves will curl lengthwise.  Water deeply 1 - 2 times a week for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
